Moderate Fire Grant Application
Project Goals:
To educate and assist our neighbors in ways to reduce hazardous fuels within the Home Ignition Zone (“HIZ”) and create defensible space around their homes. To help members of our community reduce the risk of wildfire by aiding with fuels reduction and removal. Phase I of this Project dealt with homes designated as HIGH risk under the Oregon Statewide Wildfire Hazard Map 2024-2025 (“Map”) and the newly created Rocky Point Community Wildfire Protection Plan (“RPCWPP”). Phase II of this Project will focus on properties with a Moderate risk under the Map and the RPCWPP.
Phase II Project Description:
Utilizing the Map and the RPCWPP, applications will be accepted for those properties whose property is rated MODERATE for wildfire risk. Each applicant will have their property assessed to determine if they qualify for fuels reduction activities within the HIZ (200 feet from each structure) as follows:
· Clearly define the 200’ HIZ from each structure using flagging or by other means.
· If the 200’ HIZ goes beyond a property line onto another property, the adjacent property owner would be contacted, educated on the wildfire risk, and asked for written consent to implement fuels reduction activities on the remaining 200’ of the HIZ from the adjacent structure.
· Each property will be considered for fuels reduction work only after consultation and written consent by each affected property owner.
· Fuels reduction activities may include:
o Removal of trees less than 6 inches in diameter that are “ladder fuels” or dead
o Limb trees over 6 inches in diameter 6 feet from the ground.
o Using mechanical equipment to mow, mulch, masticate, or grind small trees, brush, and grasses.
o Materials not mulched or masticated on-site may be chipped or removed to a community slash pile managed by the US Forest Service.
o Materials over 6’ diameter that contractor is not able to masticate will be owners responsibility for removal.
· This grant does not cover removal of trash, dimensional lumber, burning of slash piles, any vegetation outside of the 200’ HIZ (Home Ignition Zone)
This FW Defensible Space Grant will be at no cost to property owners within the above guidelines. If property owner requests further assistance it will be their responsibility to contact contractors for bids.
