Bruce Harp
Background
Born and raised in Bakersfield, California, Bruce joined a missionary organization after high school. In the 1976 bicentennial year, he traveled by wagon from San Diego to Philadelphia, arriving on July 4. He later studied at a School of Evangelism south of London, where he met his wife, Marion, while both served on a media team presenting in schools and churches across Europe and the Middle East. The couple settled in Medford, Oregon, where they raised two children. After retiring from Jackson County Children’s Services, they moved to Rocky Point.
Path to Rocky Point
At a station BBQ soon after arriving, the fire chief asked Bruce to volunteer. Bruce joked that the only hose he knew was in the garden. The chief said, “We can teach you.” They did—and the rest is history.
Role in Rocky Point
Bruce has volunteered for the past eight years as an Emergency Medical Responder, ambulance driver, water tender operator, and Wildland Firefighter Type 2. He has also served on the board for seven years—first volunteering, then running at the request of a community member and being elected.
"Volunteering at our fire station gives me a sense of purpose, and I love giving to my community and helping save lives."
Beyond the Station
Bruce and Marion treasure time with their five grandchildren and their church family. At home, they tend chickens and enjoy kayaking and hiking the forest with their labradoodle, Ranger.
